Patios to suit the local houses
The houses along this coast shape what people ask for. Saltburn and the older parts of Redcar have handsome Victorian houses, where a riven sandstone terrace suits the brick and the tall sash windows. Across Redcar and Dormanstown, the well-kept 1930s and post-war semis usually have long gardens with room for a generous patio, a path down to a summerhouse and a low wall to finish it off. The detached and executive homes around Marske and New Marske often come with a small starter patio that owners want to replace with something larger in porcelain or sandstone, with steps where the garden falls away. In Guisborough and the older parts of the East Cleveland villages, stone-built houses suit natural sandstone and low stone walls.
The ground changes too, from sandier soil close to the sea to heavier clay inland and on the higher ground towards Skelton, Brotton and Guisborough. The base is set for your garden, with a proper fall so water runs away from the house.
Council and planning
All of these areas are in Redcar and Cleveland Council's patch. Most patios, paths and low garden walls do not need planning permission. Saltburn and Guisborough both have conservation areas, and raised patios or listed buildings have their own rules; if your job might need permission, we'll flag it.
